Chapter ten

The Cove

Melody stared out the window of her bedroom. Squirt was lying in bed, sleeping peacefully, no doubt exhausted from her own wild adventures. She had her hands folded and tucked under her head. From this angle, you wouldn’t know she was a terror. She was still such a baby.

Their shared closet was turned upside down. The suitcase was out but everything was a mess. Melody still couldn’t figure out how to pack it. Every time she did she would pull everything back out.

The light was early. The sun was up because it was summertime, but no one in the neighborhood stirred. Melody decided she couldn’t be idle anymore next to the empty suitcase, so she picked up her waitress uniform out of a laundry pile and got ready to go. She tiptoed through the house, past the master bedroom where her mom was passed out in a dead sleep. She found a banana in the refrigerator and ate it quickly.

It wasn’t long until she was back on her bike, pedaling through the neighborhood. She thought about last night, and wondered if Jill had ever come back to the roof to find her.

It was torture seeing Jill look that beautiful and that sad all at once. Melody had spent their whole conversation straining herself not to jump on Jill. She could vividly remember the way Jill’s lips pursed. She could remember the wispy bangs placed just on top of her harder, defined cheekbones.

Melody hung her head and groaned. She pedaled harder down the dirt road.

It was like looking at a familiar object and seeing new things. That face was alien to her, something she needed to re-explore and re-record in her mind. Maybe taste. And maybe touch too. And maybe kiss all over until neither of them could breathe.

You’re so bad, shut up Melody. All you are doing is hurting yourself. You’re just the biggest masochist, clearly. There’s no point. You’re leaving.

The green blur of the jungle gave away to the pristinely kept boardwalk, and Melody parked at the side entrance boardwalk. She picked up her little backpack and pushed inside, where her manager hung back at the bar.

“Hey, Melody. You’re early.”

“Is that okay?”

“That’s great actually. No one else has dragged their butts to work yet.”

Melody was happy to get to her tasks. She worked, and it kept her mind off other things. By the time the rest of the staff arrived, there wasn’t much to do. So to keep herself occupied, she dug through her backpack and found some of the introductory materials that her college sent her.

She had read everything already, but she read it over again anyway.

“Knock knock.” Melody heard someone say.

Melody looked up and saw the youngest waiter on staff hover awkwardly at the door. “Hey. I thought you were on last night.”

“I...was. But I’m ready to take your shift now.”

Melody knit her eyebrows. “What do you mean?”

“Your apron.” He walked up to her and held his hand out.

“You must have swapped shifts with someone else.
